The Franchise Tax Board -- California's
income tax collectors -- printed the state
tax forms with a huge typo. The average cost
to a homeowner will be $1,000, according to
the San Jose Mercury News.
The printed state form instructs taxpayers to
copy the amounts from the wrong lines on
their Federal tax return to the state Form
2007 Schedule 540 (CA).
(See
details on the goof on the state's site.)
The software used by Sterck Kulik O'Neill
picks up the correct line items and does not
have the error. No other online forms or
computer programs are known to be incorrect.
Taxpayers who prepare their own taxes using
paper forms can go to the Franchise Tax
Board's page (link above) to learn how to
correct their forms.
